about

Mercy Me is the first release for Tara Coates and Sub Rosa. Front woman Tara Coates (nee Carragher) emerges from a four-year hiatus with a new line up and a dark folk sound. Poetic, gritty and sparsely arranged, Mercy Me tells the story of a woman writing a letter home from prison.

lyrics

Father dear what have I done?
My second class skin, my thoughts they run
I talk about you and how I disappoint
Now they’re gone like you always said
And I dream about ‘em from my prison bed
The days are long, but the nights, the nights tend to hurt

And I say oh mercy me, mercy me
I say oh, mercy me, mercy me
What have I done?

Time grows longer while my heart grows cold
‘cause this young girl is getting old
It’s my word and it goes against theirs
and it doesn’t matter how I feel
Or how I beg and borrow and steal
or how everything I do, I do for you

I say oh mercy me, mercy me
I say oh, mercy me, mercy me
What have I done?

Truth be told I’m not above the law
But i’d do it again, just like before
because a woman has a right to stand up for family
It’s just my mind goes blank and these eyes see red
and I wake up tonight from my prison bed
I’m talking about you and how I disappoint you

And I say oh mercy me, mercy me
I say oh, mercy me, mercy me
What have I done?
